“Today, we’re shooting a music video backwards. What does that mean? That means that we’re gonna shoot the music video first, and we’re going to create the song later.”
Jayprob has struck gold once again. NYC’s resident lover boy has returned to the spotlight to give us a 2-for-1 deal: his latest single “GEMZ” and its music video. An anthem for blurry memories of inebriated nighttime escapades, the single is accompanied by mesmerizing visuals, all captured through a fish-eye lens. However, in the midst of the red lights, bare skin, and sexual tension, there’s a catch.
Slumped in the backseat of an LED-lit vehicle, Jayprob offers viewers a bit of context before diving into the plot. He explains that he took somewhat of an unorthodox approach to the creation of both the song and the video: he put his usual creative process in reverse, recording the music video before writing the song and challenging himself to come up with lyrics to match the storyline.
Jayprob is no stranger to creative and intellectual exercise. In fact, he’s known throughout the local underground hip-hop scene for wearing several hats and having something to offer at every stage of production, as a rapper, director, cinematographer, photographer, and stylist. However, this undertaking—recording a music video with no music and writing a song to accompany a video that had already been made—might have been the greatest test of his creative ingenuity yet. We’d argue that he nailed it.
