It’s a fun time to be a woman in the rap game. Hip-hop fans are finally moving away from the notion that there can only be one female rapper in the spotlight at a time and realizing that there is more than enough room for any woman who wants to get in on the action. Female breakout artists are emerging across the country and abroad at rates higher than ever before and are establishing themselves as powerhouses in underground and mainstream music.

Among them is Brooklyn-bred emcee and orange enthusiast, Rocky Snyda. Well-known throughout the New York City underground music scene for her lyrical prowess, high-energy performances, and eccentric style, Rocky is a force to be reckoned with on multiple fronts.

On August 12, the rapper released her latest project, a two-song EP titled Rhymes With Orange. Between the two songs, the project is only about seven minutes in total, but for those seven minutes, we get up close and personal with Rocky’s personality and raw talent.

Rocky champions her versatility as a rapper in “No Face” as she effortlessly glides over the boom-baps of the old school hip-hop style beat produced by Ocean Cat. The various flows and deliveries with which she experiments throughout the song are reminiscent of the stylings of several hip-hop greats such as Da Brat, Lil Wayne, and Joey Bada$$. Rocky’s confidence shines through in “How To Succeed in Rap Without Really Trying.” With each verse, she makes it increasingly clear that she’s ready to run with the best of them and even receives a co-sign in the form of a surprise feature from Harlem wordsmith Qu’ality.

If this project is any indication of music to come from the orange-haired rapper, then we’re in for an exciting ride.
