Q: Tell us a fact about you that most may not know.

LY: I was born in Liberia, West Africa and immigrated to the States when I was 5 after my mother won the lotto.

Q: If you had to describe your photography in four words, what would they be?

LY: This is a good question. Honestly, I feel like I'm still developing as a photographer and every single day I try to work more towards incorporating my personal style, individualism, and beliefs into my work. It's definitely a work in progress; however, if I could describe my photography in four words, they'd be: beauty, simplicity, poetry, and culture (black).

Q: We notice that your style of photography reflect the vibrancy of African culture. Tell us how that style came about.

LY: In my previous answer, I mentioned that I am developing as a photographer and that is no different than my own self. For a little while now, I've been experiencing a higher and deeper level of self discovery which has led to an increased level of appreciation for my own roots, my culture, and my community. I've learned. I'm also learning so much and decided that there is nothing worth more than dedicating the body of my work - the purpose behind my work - towards uplifting the African/African American community and highlighting us in a light that depicts the true beauty of my people. It bothers me that we are depicted in the media by the masses in an inaccurate manner that falls short of what we truly deserve so I would like to do my part with what God has blessed me with, which is photography.

Q: Did you always have a love for photography? If not, when did you realize that you did?

LY: I had no idea that I would end up being a photographer and fall in love with it the way that I did. I've always had a love for art ever since the age of 7 when I began drawing portraits. By the age of 12, my mother began bringing me business because her co-workers all wanted me to draw portraits of them for pocket change in return. I guess it makes sense now why I prefer to photograph portraits today. During my freshman year of college in 2010, my good friend introduced photography to me since I would occasionally model for him. He would show me the shots and I found myself critiquing his composition and suggesting ways to improve the shots. It wasn't until 2014 when I had the financial resources to finally purchase my own first camera. The rest was pretty much history after that. Two years later, here I am... answering interview questions about my photography. "Wow" is all I can say.

Q: Do you see yourself traveling the world to showcase your visual? If so, where would you like to travel to first?

LY: Without a doubt. Ever since I moved to the United States, I've never been back home. I want Liberia to be the first place I travel [back] to not just to showcase my visual, but allow my country to contribute to my visual.
